I am a 50 something
puppy mom living in Pleasanton California. I was part of a reduction
of force in March of 2009 from a High Tech company and wanted to use
this as an opportunity to change things up in my working life. I have
always worked hard for my employer; some appreciated the effort and
some did not. So why not work hard for me! For the third time in my
career I’m reinventing myself but this time it is by my rules.
In 2006 I developed a website for fundraising for the San Francisco
AIDS Lifecycle ride (www.meandmy7.com). I used the site to keep my
supporters updated on my progress with training, fundraising and more.
I really liked building the site so I did another site
(www.soveryshiny.com) that turned out to be mostly about my dog Abby. I
started helping friends with their sites and now I’m turning my
attentions towards web development and web marketing.
<< Half way to LA!
So I started this site as a marketing project as a site that will
benefit others by learning to craft or by teaching craft. In the
process, teaching me how to develop and market a website.
Why craft? It has been a part of my life for a long time partly due to
necessity and partly for fun. In my twenties I was helping a friend
with artwork for his model railroad club. They wanted tee shirts so I
learned how to silk screen. In my thirties I got married and my
crafting really kicked in because of the expense of weddings, my veil,
flowers, altar baskets, reception decorations, and everything else.
Since then I seems to always have a project on the go, for me or for
friends, practical or beautiful. I took an interior decoration class
in my forties and stumbled across William Morris while writing a paper
for the class. He said “Have nothing in your house that you do not
know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful” That changed how I
approached everything in my house and that is how I want to approach
this website.
So what do I get out of this? If I have a lot of traffic to the site
by bringing the “more crafty” together with the “less crafty”, then it
is successful.
What does the artisan get? Exposure from my marketing of the site, a
bio on the site if they want one and a link to their etsy, blog, or web
pages at the bottom of every tutorial they submit.
